How safe is your business from cyber attack?

Our Digital Adviser, Rich Bruford, takes a look at the risk that cyber attacks and data loss poses to small business.

Data breaches have become mainstream news over the years, for the most part it's only the corporate organisations that suffer such breaches. However, away from the spotlight of the media, businesses of all sizes have an ongoing battle with keeping data secure.

As well as the larger organisations, SMEs fall victim too. More often than not for these organisations it can be difficult to implement best practice security. This is often down to the lack of time, budget or knowledge to make informed decisions and get it right. In essence, small businesses can be easy targets, but they don't need to be!

Cyber resilience doesn't need to be overcomplicated. However, it needs to be approached with the same level of due diligence as other operational and financial risks within the organisation.

By educating staff and putting into place basic security policies can go a long way in the battle against cyber risks.

Simple things such as enforcing a complex password policy, deploying anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall protection can stop infiltration. The biggest weakness in most business is human intervention.  Therefore, employees who are trained to identify phishing scams and potentially harmful attachments/links greatly reduce your exposure to the risk of data loss.

Creating these policies and educating your staff will come off the back of your own knowledge as well as other stakeholders. However educating yourself on this can be daunting, costly and more often than not confusing.

* If you would like to learn more, get help with creating a strategy and enable yourself to make informed decisions on the cyber-security, the Digital Programme offers a range of free workshops.  See the full list here.
