Lanka Kade is a family-run business which designs, crafts and supplies fair trade wooden toys that inspire learning through play. Its distinctive range offers bright, bold colours and natural wood finishes. All its toys are exclusively designed in-house in the UK and handcrafted by skilled artisans in Sri Lanka. Lanka Kade’s aim is to reduce poverty through trade by building long-term, sustainable trading partnerships that provide stability and protect local skills.

Lanka Kade’s five-year-old website was built by bolting together several pieces of different software, which meant it was no longer fit-for-purpose in the current digital age. It wanted to create a new ecommerce platform which was not only future-proof, but also integrated with business management systems such as Sage and could help it to streamline and simplify its back-of-house operations and administration.

Digital Growth Programme Solution

We provided grant funding of £6,000 towards a total project spend of £14,000 to create a new ecommerce website with Sage integration, helping the business to improve efficiency, productivity, communications with retailers and customer service. Sage functionality reduces manual inputting, which removes human error and frees-up staff time to focus on areas such as customer care and marketing. The site is also device-responsive, which enables Lanka Kade to provide a seamless, user-friendly customer experience across all devices and allows buyers to navigate the site and place orders with ease.

The Impact

The site launched in April 2018 and since going live, Lanka Kade’s online sales have increased by 13%. Time is precious to the small, close-knit team and the new website has freed-up the team to spend more time on other activities which add value, such as marketing, product development and after-sales care. It has also enabled the company to recruit an extra member of staff, for 25 hours a week, to help with order fulfilment in the warehouse. The website provides real-time stock availability for customers and includes a ‘wish list’ feature which allows users to save their favourite products while browsing. Orders are then imported directly into the firm’s inventory system, which allows for more accurate control of stock.
